GlaxoSmithKline sues Abbott over Norvir
Executive Summary
Four years after Abbott raised the price of Norvir by 400 percent, GSK files an antitrust complaint alleging Abbott sought to monopolize the market for protease inhibitor boosters and violated a business agreement in which GSK paid Abbott to co-promote its Lexiva for use with Norvir. GSK says it did not sue at the time of the price hike because it was reluctant to take a business partner to court and HIV patients had filed suit. The Nov. 9 complaint cites internal Abbott documents showing the company had considered other options to increase market share of its Kaletra, which incorporates Norvir, and that raising the price of Norvir might lead to federal investigations.
