President nominates HHS assistant secretaries

President Bush nominates HHS Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Cristina Beato to be assistant secretary for health July 23. Beato would replace U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona, MD, who has been acting assistant secretary since Eve Slater, MD, resigned in February ("The Pink Sheet" Feb. 10, 2003, p. 10). The former executive director of the bipartisan Medicare commission has decided to return to Louisiana where he is contemplating a run for governor.
