Jeffrey Koplan appointed CDC director July 10 by HHS Secretary Donna Shalala. He will assume the position Oct. 5; CDC's Claire Broome will continue as acting director until then. Koplan, who previously worked at the CDC for 22 years, established the centers' national women's breast and cervical cancer early detection program in 1987. Most recently, Koplan was president of the Prudential Center for Health Care Research in Atlanta
