Geisinger Health System gives away 60,000 bottles of generic drugs as cost-saving measure.

Executive Summary

GEISINGER PHYSICIANS GIVE AWAY 60,000 GENERIC SCRIPTS in one year at 50 ambulatory centers operated by Geisinger Health System, the Pennsylvania group- model managed care organization said. Since September 1994, Geisinger physicians have dispensed about 60,000 full-course regimens of medication for free to Geisinger enrollees under a plan designed to reduce pharmacy expenditures in several therapeutic categories. The Pharmaceutical Utilization Program gives physicians 10-day supplies of amoxicillin, ibuprofen and erythromycin and 100-count bottles of atenolol, hydrochlorothiazide and furosemide to be dispensed to appropriate patients.
