Clinical practice guidelines and patient outcomes research teams supported by HHS' Agency for Health Care Policy & Research address 10 of the 15 most costly diagnoses for which Medicare patients are hospitalized, HHS Assistant Secretary for Health Philip Lee, MD, told the House Ways & Means/Health Subcommittee at a March 21 hearing. Lee noted that these conditions account for about 80% of the amount billed by hospitals to the Medicare program.
