Executive Summary

Prices for 23 prescription drugs -- including Vasotec, Prinivil, Proscar and Pepcid -- were raised by 4.2% on June 14. Merck, which has pledged to contain price increases for any individual products to within one percentage point over inflation, projects a CPI rate of 3.2% for 1993. Prices of Merck's cholesterol-lowering drugs Mevacor and Zocor were not changed; the firm raised those products by 4.1% in November. Merck provided a June 14-28 buy-in period for purchases at pre-increase prices up to a one-month supply.
