Rep. Evans (D-Ill.) has announced he will challenge Rep. Montgomery (D-Miss.) for leadership of the committee. Evans, 41, has served on the Veterans Affairs Committee since beginning his congressional service in 1983 and is currently chairman of the V- A/Oversight subcommittee. He maintains that Montgomery, 72, is "out of touch" with the major issues facing the V-A including health care reform and the down-sizing of the military. Evans also sits on the Armed Services Committee and the House Select Committee on Children. Montgomery authored HR 2890 in the last Congress that would have rolled back drug prices to V-A hospitals to pre-OBRA '90 levels.
