WALGREENS PHARMACY SALES UP 27% IN FIRST QUARTER; 100 STORE OPENINGS PLANNED

Walgreens' first-quarter pharmacy sales increased 27%, the chain reported for the three months ended Nov. 30. "Monthly prescription sales topped $ 100 mil. for the first time in our history in October," President Fred Canning said. The chain's total volume rose 16% during the quarter to $ 1.1 bil., while profits jumped 42% to $ 19 mil. Walgreens added that new drugstore openings should reach 100 in the current fiscal year.
