Spanish nurses "need legal backing" for greater medtech access drive

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Primary care reforms being transposed by Spain's regional authorities from central government, have led the Galicia region to plan legislation supporting greater use of medical devices by nursing staff. The "next stage" of the reforms will see nurses gaining greater responsibility for using a wider range of devices or for authorising their use, as well as for prescribing medication, for example, regional health minister Maria Jose Rubio Vidal has noted. During a meeting with nursing sector leaders in Santiago de Compostela last week, she said that the reforms make it necessary to normalise policy in this area and provide such legal support. "To not regulate the situation would leave a legal vacuum in their roles and responsibilities."
